Why Did the U.S. Become a Great Industrial Nation?
Factors of Production: those things needed for industry to develop
natural resources - raw materials
the U.S. is abundantly wealthy in this area
human resources - people to do work
many immigrants came to the U.S. in the late 1800’s
many Americans were leaving their farms and going to cities to find work
capital resources - all of the man-made items such as buildings, machines, etc. needed to turn raw materials into finished products
these items cost money (money is another capital resource)
in the late 1800’s there were many people with money to invest in new businesses

In the years following the Civil War the U.S. had all it needed to become industrialized. In addition, the following things helped:
new inventions
new sources of power
water and steam began to be replaced with oil and electricity
improved transportation
expanding railroad network
bigger, faster ships
made it possible to move raw materials and finished products more quickly and more cheaply
made it possible to reach new markets
more consumers (people who buy things)
more demand for products led to more production
improved communication
telegraph (1840's)
telephone (1880's)
government help
incentives to railroads to expand
high tariffs and low taxes
few immigration restrictions
