In the first years of the twentieth century, the nations of Europe competed fiercely with one another. Their rivalry soon drew the continent into one of history’s most destructive wars. The United States tried but failed to stay out of the conflict. In the final year of the war, millions of American troops crossed the Atlantic to fight for freedom and democracy. America’s soldiers won a great victory. After the war ended, however, America’s leaders were less successful in their efforts to build a lasting peace.
